Spectators of Lindy
On December twenty-first Anthony Amesti released an email to all students and parents of the Lindenhurst High School. The title, in bright green letters, read “NO SPECTATORS AT ATHLETIC CONTESTS”.
The email was short but held a lot of unfortunate information. Our athletes work so hard, but they don’t just play to win. They play to have fun and entertain classmates, friends, and family. To have it taken away hurts their self-esteem and wants to participate.
December 22, 2021, was the first day this rule was enforced. Lindenhurst High School sports teams being affected include boys swimming and diving, fencing, wrestling, and basketball. Track teams compete at Suffolk County Community College, but the college doesn’t allow spectators either. Athletes are lucky to have live stream videoing meets. Although not all teams are streamed. The teams that are live-streamed are track, basketball, and wrestling.
The email had stated that the spectators were not allowed at “HOME” games, nothing was ever said about viewing the away games, so as far as that goes away games are permitted. Mr. Amesti had also mentioned that the situation would be reassessed on January 3, 2022. As this day came around no word was spread. Leading everyone to believe that the withholding of spectators is still in place.
Yet another email was released on January 6th. This was the email everyone has been waiting for. For all home games each athlete is allowed two spectators to come and watch them partake in their sport. Our school is aware of the pole covid-19 is taking. Though we are fighting and slowly pushing through to overcome all we are experiencing with the pandemic.
