The Pros and Cons of Valentine’s Day
Love is in the air, and February 14th is just around the corner. Some will be showered in affection by their significant other, and some will be home, celebrating by themselves. Valentine’s Day is a special day for love and romance. Either you love it or hate it. Depending on the situation you’re in, Valentine’s Day can be a controversial topic.
Valentine’s Day is a day to express your love towards others and gives people an excuse to celebrate their relationship. Not to mention, all the flowers, chocolates, jewelry ,and stuffed animals. Valentine’s Day is also a great time for fundraisers. High School students usually put together candy grams, flowers, or notes to sell for students to give to loved ones. Local businesses like flower shops and convenience stores skyrocket in profits. And it is said that over millions of dollars are spent for Valentine’s Day each year in the U.S, which is also good for the economy.
However, Valentine’s Day isn’t always everyone’s favorite time of the year. Especially for those that recently went through a breakup, or don’t have a Valentine, it could feel lonely. The holiday is commercialized, and emphasizes the standard of needing a relationship or Valentine to “be happy”. Valentine’s Day is when people spend large amounts of money on flowers and chocolate each year, and it’s quite expensive. And nonetheless stressful, when you don’t know what to buy someone. Others also think that it’s a fake day where love is just tossed around and is unnecessary. Sometimes Valentine’s Day can lead to someone being heartbroken or devastated.
Whether you are lonely or in love, Valentine’s Day is for us people to show our love to others and feel the joy around the ones we care about. The opinions will always be divided, celebrating the holiday or not, go out and enjoy your February 14th!
