The Ice Road
The Academy Awards are coming and it is a time to reflect on the movies of 2021. It wasn’t a big year for movies, but a lot of the less popular ones were the ones that really shined. My pick for Best Picture of 2021 is The Ice Road. The Ice Road is a Netflix movie about a Canadian Trucker, Mike (Liam Neeson), who is going on a high stakes trucking job to bring supplies that will help save people trapped in a mine. However, the job is on an Ice Road, an extremely dangerous road where someone driving the wrong way can be fatal due to the ice. With him on this job is his brother Gurty (Marcus Thomas) who is a veteran with Aphasia, a fellow trucker Jim Goldenrod (Laurence Fishburne), a woman named Tantoo (Amber Midthunder), and Varnay (Benjamin Walker). The environment isn’t the only obstacle in the movie, there is also a conspiracy afoot that causes Mike and his allies a lot of trouble. This movie isn’t any Liam Neeson action movie. The plot is more unique than most Liam Neeson movies because of its setting and the goal. The idea of an ice road is cool in itself but with it there are a lot of great action scenes and driving scenes on the ice. In addition, the movie has a lot of emotional weight to it. The characters are relatable and so are the actions and decisions they have to make. In the movie, the stakes are always high which keeps the movie exciting. Overall, it’s an excellent movie and deserves recognition for it.
