The Batman
From fantastic director Matt Reeves, comes one of, if not the, best comic book movies ever made. Loosely adapting Jeph Loeb’s Batman: The Long Halloween, The Batman amazes audiences with advanced presentation techniques including sound design and cinematography. In the age of cookie cutter superhero flicks, The Batman stands out as a noir detective tale told from a modern lens.
All the characters excel and feel very natural, especially Paul Dano’s Riddler. Every single character has their place in the story and interacts with each other in interesting ways.
By far, the best part of the movie is the cinematography. The cinematographer, Greg Fraser, is known for using visually stunning and appealing camera methods in films such as Dune and Killing Them Softly.
As a comic book fan, this movie satisfies beyond belief. In a world full of overly grounded and adaptations that miss the point of the character (looking at you, Batman Vs Superman), The Batman creates an extremely accurate and interesting Year 2 Batman.
Another great part of this film is the costume design / makeup. Colin Farrel’s makeup for The Penguin completely transforms him. Riddler’s zodiac-killer inspired costume is both chilling and fascinating.
The Batman is a great sign that superhero films can be true art. I feel that this will become one of the definitive superhero films for an entire generation. I give The Batman a 9.4/10 score!
