The History of Lululemon

Lilly Fischer, Staff Writer

Lululemon is one of the most popular brands today among women and men of all ages. The brand makes mostly athletic clothing and accessories that people know and love. Many adore the comfort, fitting, and style of the clothing. Recently, over the past few years, the popularity of the store has only increased as more and more people are introduced to their clothing. Every business has to start somewhere, so what inspired this company in the first place?

Lululemon was founded by a man named Chip Wilson in Vancouver, Canada in 1998. The first ever store opened in November of the year 2000 in the neighborhood of Kitsilano in Vancouver. The first Lululemon store ever brought to the USA, opened in 2003 in Santa Monica, California. Since then, as of January 2022, there are a total of 574 stores around the world.

Chip Wilson came up with the idea to create Lululemon after attending a yoga class, and noticing that the instructor had noticeably sheer clothing on. This sparked an idea in Wilson, that he should be the one to create supportive, covering, and comfortable athletic wear that people could enjoy without the worry of any see-through discomforts.

Lululemon has a variety of athletic attire to choose from. Four of their major products would include sports bras, tops, bottoms, and jackets and / or outerwear. The brand also makes accessories such as hair ties, water bottles, key chains, backpacks, and much more. There are many different styles to choose from each category. There is also a variety of sizes, supporting all body types varying on each item.

Many people wonder what is the cause for the items to be at such a high cost. The price is due to the top quality materials, as well as comfort and durability of the clothing. Despite these prices, many people take interest in this brand and enjoy wearing the clothes they make.
