Tyler Faber

In February 2022, Mitski released a new single for her album Laurel Hell and it was an excellent choice for a single. The song, called “Love Me More” has a unique flair to it. Unlike many songs that were released in the last few years, “Love Me More” has a distinct and recognizable sound. The instrumentation is upbeat and retro-sounding and sounds like something straight out of the 80s. In contrast, Mitski’s singing sounds a lot more sad than the background music and really represents the raw emotion that the song is trying to portray. The combination of the instrumentation and singing gives an overall fresh and exciting feel to the song. These two elements are what make the song sound unique. The lyrics also contribute to the emotion of the song but are left mostly up to interpretation. They show themes that resemble things like depression and burn out. However, they are a bit repetitive with the lyrics “I want you to love me more” and “Love me more” being repeated constantly. It doesn’t put a damper on the good aspects of the song but the parts where the lyrics had more substance to them felt easier to connect to. In terms of listenability, the song is good but definitely isn’t one of those songs that you can listen to over and over without getting bored. Its repetitiveness in sound and lyrics throughout the entire song are what makes it so it only sounds good when listened to occasionally. It fails to remain exciting when listening to it more than once in a sitting.
