There’s something about Mitski’s music that is deeply applicable to the experience of adolescent and teenage girls, particularly those who are not white. Her new single, “Love Me More” is a continuation of this trend. Overall, the song is different from her other music, instrumental wise. It has a retro vibe, with a hint of “Take On Me” by A-ha.

While the majority of her audience is young girls looking to make some sense of their life, Mitski’s new song can be relatable to many, especially considering the different ways one could interpret “Love Me More”. Some could complain about how ‘different’ this song is compared to her other music. However, without diversity of sound, perhaps Mitski’s music would start becoming repetitive.

Upon first listen, “Love Me More” wasn’t my favorite song in the world. But somehow, the song gets better with each listen– like an acquired taste that after a while, you find yourself craving and begging for others around you to try. Overall, I’d rate this song a solid 8/10.
