Cruella

Cruella

Cruella is the origin story of the infamous Disney supervillain, Cruella De Vil. It is based in 1970s London during a punk rock “revolution” if you will. The movie follows a young thief named Estella who aspires to be more than a petty pickpocket and become a fashion designer for the infamous House of Baroness. She becomes friends with two other young thieves and they make a life for themselves on the streets. When Estella lands a job at one of London’s biggest department stores and pulls a stunt in one of the front window displays, she catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman, the founder of House of Baroness. Throughout Estella’s time working as a designer for her, their relationship initiates a series of revelations into who Estella really is and helps her embrace her vengeful side, turning her into Cruella.

Emma Stone played Cruella so well and really embraced who she was. Each actor honed in on the emotions presented in the film and played into each character very well. Since the film is set in the 70s in London, the music, fashion and feel of that era is very present in the movie. There is such commitment to details it is really incredible. I would say that the film is about finding yourself, not quite fitting the mold that others make for you and realizing who you really are.

With all of these elements in mind, I think it really has the potential to be voted Best Picture of 202l. If you haven’t watched it yet, I really recommend you do because it is amazing.
