The First People of Lindenhurst

 The First People of Lindenhurst

Lindenhurst is the hometown of a lot of people, from the Secoutage and Masapeaqua tribes, to the people you may know living there. The name Lindenhurst came from the Linden trees that were planted. A long time ago, Lindenhurst used to be a home for the Native American tribes. The area was then called Neguntatogue, which means “forsaken land.”

The first Native Americans in Lindenhurst were the Secatogue and Massapequa tribes. They roamed around Lindenhurst in search of food. The Native American Tribes  fished, hunted, and grew crops in order to meet their basic needs for food. They planted the “Three Sisters”- bean, squash, and corn. The Native Americans  used animal skins to use as clothing. The area has great soil and great types of hydration ways. The Native Americans hunted whales for food along the South Bay.

The Native Americans made their homes out of different types of materials such as wood and bark. The type of houses they lived in were called longhouses. The local Indian leader in Lindenhurst was called Keossochok. To make different types of tools they used clams and shells.

Lindenhurst is a great village, but there is still a lot you don’t know about the history of this amazing place. Now it’s your turn to explore your hometown and learn more!
