Super Star is Super Sexist

Cam Newton Runs His Mouth Off

Chris Diliberto, Breaking News Editor

The Carolina Panthers signal caller, Cam Newton, has been a notable name when talking about the National Football League. Cam Newton is one of the most popular and loved players of his 2011 draft class due to his success for him winning the Rookie of the year award in 2012 and winning the MVP award in 2016. Cam has also been a class act on and off the field -participating in the Make- A-Wish Foundation, handing children footballs after he scores, and helping the NFL with their Play60 program to help children who are obese.  From all the goofy dancing in the end zone to his charity work, it’s safe to say Newton has become a role model for young children across the nation. If Cam Newton had a single clue of how many people are watching their children look up to him maybe he wouldn’t say such controversial words while talking to the media.

After a stellar performances against Tom Brady’s Patriots, Cam Newton’s interview with the press took away from the thrilling victory. Cam said something that shocked the world. When asked confidently by female reporter, Jourdan Rodrigue, “Cam I know you take a lot of pride in seeing receivers play well. Devin Funchess has seem to really embrace the physicality of his routes and making—getting those extra yards. Does that give you a little bit of enjoyment to see him kind of truck sticking people out there?” Cam stunned by her question then muttered into his microphone, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”  How does a top paid NFL player make a sexist comment like that? And instead of realizing it and apologizing after making it dead silent he then said “it’s funny” emphasizing how clueless he was to the situation.

Now Cam did have a private chat with Jourdan Rodrigue according to CNN, but Jourdan claims Cam only made things worse by telling Rodrigue “she wasn’t seeing the correct things during the football game…” and “didn’t understand the routes she was asking about…” Jourdan, inflamed with anger, stood up for herself arguing with Cam saying “…he didn’t know what she saw nor how hard she has studied football, and that maybe they needed to have a deeper conversation.”  The two exchanged a few more words until Cam made his way to the locker room.

Rodrigue has released a statement on her social media claiming Cam Newton “belittled” her and “countless” other women in the same work field has her. “He did not apologize for his comments.” Rodrigue also said in her statement.   It will be very interesting to see how Cam Newton will handle the growing situation. The only thing Cam Newton really had to do is be a professional and a man also, and just apologize for his words right then and there, but instead he made matters worse. Just hours after Cam Newton’s controversial comments to Jourdan Rodrigue, Cam has already lost one of his endorsements.  According to ESPN the company has confirmed that they will keep Cam Newton under contract, but will not use him, but have started the processes of pulling existing advertising that includes Newton.
After only losing one endorsement, Cam Newton has uploaded an apology video on his twitter, @cameronnewton, apologizing to all women around the world and saying “don’t be me, but be better than me” acknowledging his major role as a role model.
