The Guilty, New Netflix Movie

Samantha Nuss, Staff Writer

The new Netflix movie, The Guilty directed by Antoine Fuqua was just recently released on October 1, 2021 on Netflix. The Netflix movie was a remake of Den Skyldige, a Danish movie made in 2018 that was based on true events. Gustav Moller, the director of Den Skyldige said it was inspired by a 911 call he found on YouTube. The Guilty star Jake Gyllenhaal, coming from his role as Mysterio in Spider-man: Far From Home, played Joe Baylor, the main character. Gyllenhaal’s character does not leave the screen and the movie is from his point of view.

What makes this movie so special? The thriller was filmed in 11 days during the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2020. Since it was filmed in such a small amount of time, the cast and producers had to come up with distinctive methods to film on set. While in an interview with Collider Gyllenhaal said, “It needed to be done with a time clock.” In the interview Fuqua also stated that “I mean, everybody jumped on this movie to make it work knowing we were under pressure for time during COVID to keep everyone safe. So I think it was just one of those things where we just did it.”

The Guilty is currently at a 6.3 star rating and ranked number 21 for most popular movies this year so far. Many critics were conflicted about the plot of the movie and many are saying it could have been better if it wasn’t a remake of Den Skyldige. Many say the film was “a snooze” or a “waste of their time.” Others say that it was a great movie and Antoine Fuqua was noticed for keeping the tension throughout the film with a surprising ending. Although the movie isn’t the greatest of all time, it is a good action and thriller film.
