Homelessness In NYC

Joseph Gambino, Staff Writer

In New York City, thousands of people live homeless on the streets. The recent Covid outbreak has caused them in particular to take drastic losses, with many dying from the disease. While efforts are being made to help them, it seems like their situation only worsens.

Homelessness in the city has been identified as being caused primarily by domestic abuse, mental health issues, substance abuse issues, and issues with finding proper housing. Estimates indicate that there are almost 80,000 homeless men, women, and children, with about 2,400 sleeping on the streets or in the subways, rather than official shelters. Not helping matters is that the new mayor of NY, Eric Adams, is performing sweeps on several encampments. The fear of losing their only homes has caused an increase in anxiety in an already stressful situation. Sadly, these fears have come to pass, with a homeless settlement being given a notice that they will be removed from their camp on Wednesday, April 6th. Needless to say, this has caused much sorrow and pain in the residents of this area, being forced to leave their homes and risk themselves wherever they end up. And this is only one camp, with many others being sweeped.

To sum it up, it is a very bad situation for the homeless residents of New York City. They are plagued by mental illness and substance abuse, while also having to deal with the recent Coronavirus outbreak. On top of that, they must deal with the state forcing them out of their camps, which were the only stable place that some of these people could find. Even with aid being provided by religious organizations, the government, and charities, their situation seems to be very grim.
