Streetwear and How to Style It

Streetwear and How to Style It

Streetwear has been around for many years and is still popular anywhere. It is a fashion style that became popular in the late 1970s and has a casual touch to it. Streetwear includes comfortable but also trending clothing such as graphic tees, hoodies, sneakers, and sweatpants. The key to streetwear is its many different styles. You could have baggy pants with a cropped hoodie and a bunch of accessories, or you could wear an over-sized jacket, graphic tee, and jeans together.

Where does streetwear come from? Streetwear originally came from New York, Los Angeles surf culture, and Japanese street fashion. It has elements of punk, skateboarding, and sportswear inspiration. Street style is a fashion style that is mostly focused on individualism. Models working for sports brands are inspired by street style and can influence people to wear sportswear more. Skateboarding is often influenced by many fashion styles, while skate shoes such as Vans, Adidas, and Converse are even used by those who do not skateboard. Punk fashion was an inspiration for streetwear because of its leather jackets and band tees. Streetwear’s creator, Shawn Stussy, sold t-shirts with the logo he used on his surfboards. His sales increased as time went on. This created streetwear’s differences and focus on tees!

How can you style streetwear?

  1. Find and wear good looking sneakers. Your footwear can help you find out what your outfit should look like.
  2. Layer your clothing. Start with thin clothing, and get heavier as you layer. Make sure you keep your jacket unzipped! Stay comfortable, and make sure you stay away from leather jackets and sweatpants together.
  3. Go a couple sizes up in your clothing! Not too large, but not so fitting either.                                                                    Of course, make sure you explore different types of fashion to be sure of what looks best on you!
