Fencing is Officially a Sport!

Lindenhursts Latest and Greatest Team

Thomas Vine, Staff writer

The sport fencing brings a new team to the Lindenhurst High School. The coach is Mr. Carro and the assistant coach is someone  from outside the district.  Her name is Mrs.Feldman. In previous years it had been a club, but now thanks to Nicole Rinaldi, Christopher Kirtz, and Mr.Degulio it has been updated to a varsity sport. A student of LHS, Nicole, said that the hardest part about making this a team was getting the support of the town.

The teams they will be competing against are Walt Whitman, Huntington and Half Hollow Hills just to name a few. When I spoke with Nicole about how she got into it she said, “I got into it through a Girl Scout program and fell in love” The way the matches are played is quite simple: each team takes their three best with each weapon and have them compete, boys and girls are separated. When it comes to captains there is one boy and one girl captain and Nicole is the female captain and Chris Kirtz is the male captain. That is the total of nine boys and nine girls  The three types of weapons that you will be using are a sabre, a foil and an épée.

Fencing can open many doors for kids when it comes to going to college said Mr.Carro and especially thanks to the fact that there are so few teams on Long Island.  When speaking with Sean Garvey, a freshman who plans on joining to the team, he said “I can’t wait I’m so glad that it became a team just before I got here,” and then when asked about how she got involved Liz Fontanilles laughingly  that “Nicole made me, there was a lot of peer pressure involved.” There will not be a JV team for fencing. There will be a meeting on the first of November and practice will start the 13th of November. For all those who are on the team good luck and GO Dawgs!
