Throughout the history of our nation there has been a notable number of disease outbreaks that have been harmful to the health of our national population. Notable US outbreaks include the Diphtheria Epidemic from 1921 to 1925, the pollo outbreak of the 1950’s, and the 2014 whooping cough. However, none can be compared to the recent outbreak of E. Coli that is infesting the nation.

This outbreak was initially reported in seven states starting in the early weeks of April. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the outbreak,”is now the largest multistate foodborne E. Coli outbreak since 2006.” The source of this outbreak is believed to be tainted lettuce that originated from the Yuma, Arizona region. USA Today states that there are now over 98 people affected from the E Coli. Outbreak.

The experiences of those suffering from E Coli are terrifying and frightening for a person to go through. According to “Nutrition Nut on the run” Hilary Parker stated that,”the effect of my illness directly affected me on how to keep my body free of harm.” This is just one example of many individuals who are fighting E Coli during this outbreak.

According to CNN,”Forty-six of the ill individuals have been hospitalized, a higher rate than the 30 percent usually seen in E. Coli outbreaks.”These serve symptoms have included severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. While most people recover within 5 to 7 days, the people that are most affected by this outbreak include the very young and the very old. The CDC is currently working to find a cure for this outbreak through scientific research at its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.  For now, the CDC is advising people to take proper precautions when working with lettuce.
