LHS ENL Family Night

On December 4th, Lindenhurst High School hosted their ENL Family Night. It is a night for all of the ENL families to get together in our cafeteria for a night of food, family, and fun. It is held two times a year, in the fall and in the spring. Many people attended this great night, with over 100 people attending this event. Some of these people included the Lindenhurst Public Library, LHS Principal, Dr. Brodie, and the coordinator of the foreign language department, Ms. Schilling.

“The goal of the night is to get everybody together to share and have fun.”

— Ms. Kaplan

This event is meant to present the opportunities that the ENL students receive here at Lindenhurst High School. Language barriers when coming to a new country can be very challenging to overcome, but this opens many doors of opportunity for these students. LHS has clubs for these students like the Homework Help Club and the Bridge to Success club.  The Homework Help Club simply helps these students with all their homework they get from their classes. The Bridge to Success Club helps these students when making the transition from their native language to English, and it helps them improve their skills. This night is a perfect example of how the school community helps and reaches out to the home community. Students need help on both ends and if they don’t get help on either end, it will be very difficult for them to succeed.

The Charles Street Times spoke with ENL teacher here at Lindenhurst High School, Ms. Kaplan, who helped run the event. When asked about the event she said, “The goal of the night is to get everybody together to share and have fun.”  Ms. Kaplan was involved in planning the event and according to her, it was a huge success in bringing all the ENL families together where everyone was able to have a good time.  She also stated that over 100 people attended and there will be another ENL Family Night coming up in the spring.
