Cuphead: New Game, Old Style!!!

Sean Mollo, Staff Writer

With the evolution of games, you would think newer and more realistic graphics. However, what would you do if the latest and most popular game so far, is based on 30’s cartoons? If people still don’t know what this article is talking about, it’s about the new game, “Cuphead”.

The story takes place in a land called “Inkwell Isle” following the two brothers, “Cuphead and Mugman”. One day they wandered from home and entered a place called “The Devil’s Casino” where they had a winning streak until they met the owner, the devil himself. He offered a bigger bet where if they win one more roll, they gain all the loot in his casino. However if they lose, he takes their souls. Without thinking, Cuphead rolled the dice and lost with snake eyes. The brothers pleaded for their lives, so the devil pulled out a list of souls and gave them a chance. If they were to collect the souls of all his runaway debtors by midnight the next day, they will be excused. If failed, they will lose their souls themselves. And so begins the adventure of a game called “Cuphead.”

The game itself is a run and jump game, with third person view and shooter mechanics. There is two gameplay options you can take, having one being single-player mode as the red character, the game is named after, “Cuphead.”  Feeling lonely? Well don’t worry, there is a two-player cooperative mode where the second person becomes the blue brother, “Mugman.” You maybe saying to yourself, “But wait it can’t just be a run and gun, side-scroller right? There’s gotta be more?”  Well good news, there is more than just that! There is a upgrading system that helps you gameplay wise so you don’t have to die repeatedly and stuck at the same boss. Each boss has there own design with a background and moves that best fit them. And the best part, you keep all earnings, upgrades, and weapons between each death with the ability of infinite lives. Now you don’t have to lose anything and restart characters whenever you die. With all these positives factors you maybe wondering what is the downside? There is only one downside known. IT IS EXTREMELY HARD!!! With all these good things, the creators needed it to be at least a challenge. And with so many bosses, they escalate in difficulty so it would last. Older or experienced gamers may make it look like a breeze and finish it so quickly. But when it comes to others, it becomes a “Try, Die, and Repeat” cycle till you memorized the pattern to beat one boss, then do this strategy all over again to beat the next one. For the inexperienced, this game will last forever.

In total, “Cuphead” gives a new meaning to retro and fun little idea to follow for a storyline with many loveable and creative bosses and characters. But truly changes this game from cute to a masterpiece is the difficulty and gaming mechanics that actually gives a challenge to gamers but gives a different view rather than some remake or similar game. It is even understandable why this game has already been nominated for awards and was bought so quickly. Now there is one question that is still remaining. Do you wanna go on a 30’s cartoon adventure?
