Veterans Day!

Erika Hendrickson, Staff Writer

Veterans Day falls on a Thursday this year! Many kids see this day as just another day off, but it’s so much more than that.  On May 13th, 1938 the U.S. government made November 11th a legal holiday. This holiday is Armistice Day, but now it is called Veterans Day. This day was originally set aside to honor the veterans of World War I, hence the holiday originally being called Armistice Day. After World War II, requiring more soldiers, marines, and airmen to fight. The 83rd congress decided to change the holiday from Armistice day and to Veterans day, so that all Veterans could be celebrated.

On Tuesday November 9th, the Lindenhurst Public Library had a musical salute to our veterans for Veterans Day. A musical salute is when people of the community come together and present music played from different times, in this case war and they use it to honor our veterans. They presented memorable and original tapes of Military songs. These songs ranged from the time of the Civil war all the way to the time of the Vietnam war. This event is seeming to be a huge deal because, when last checked on the Libraries website there were only eight seats left.

From Saturday November 6th to Saturday November 13th the fourteenth annual Run for Warriors is being held. Due to Covid-19 this event is now taking place virtually. This event taking place virtually has allowed it to go on for multiple weeks instead of it just being one day as it was before Covid-19. This event is to provide wounded veterans encouragement. It also gives the wounded veterans the opportunity to go after the sport of running or walking. Well this event may seem like it is only for veterans, it is for everyone and a good way to show your support for our veterans.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our veterans, whether they are on active duty or not. Even after Veterans Day, We all should support our veterans for all they’ve done for us. On November 11th or even after that. Try and take time out of your day to talk to a veteran and thank them.
