The Future of Starbucks: Reusable Mugs and Cups
March 25, 2022
Starbucks just announced that their goal is to provide customers with reusable cups and mugs every visit. The multi million dollar coffee company plans to accomplish this by 2025. Starbucks is also working on a project called the borrowing cup program where people would borrow mugs and cups to drink while in the store and return them to be washed and reused by other customers to reduce waste. This project was originally meant to start in early 2020, but with the Covid-19 pandemic many plans were put on hold. Luckily, now with Covid cases no longer on the rise, Starbucks can put the pedal to the metal once again. Another idea Starbucks came up with was to bring your own cup or mug to be filled at the store. This idea has sparked the interest of millions around the world as customers would get up to 50 cents off their order if they bring their own mug/cup.
According to washingtonexaminer.com, the implication of this idea would lower the amount of wasted disposable cups by an astonishing 200,000. The disposable cups are usually made out of plastic which is not good for the environment as it takes up to 1000 years for these cups to break down in landfills. Therefore, over time they will remain there as litter where animals could eat them and the polystyrene breaks down, intoxicating the surrounding soil of the environment. Starbucks believes they could persuade customers by providing them with cup washing stations in stores for free where they do not have to use their own water at home and by making cup promotions and deals with partnerships such as Target. The real question is, will Starbucks actually go through with this plan? By 2025 will people actually care more for the environment as the generations progress. I guess we will have to wait while Starbucks gets busy!
