The AP Bio students at Lindenhurst High School were given the great opportunity of taking a two day field trip to Sailors Haven, Fire Island. The trip was called the LEFT trip and students all received T-shirts. The school provided transportation and some teachers volunteered to help out and supervise the students. The main advisor of the trip was Mr. Polocheck, who has been organizing this event for many years.
Everyone got to Fire Island by taking a 20 minute ferry. The students got a tour of the Sunken Forest to prepare them for the tour that they will eventually be giving to the fourth graders in the Lindenhurst district. They explored the area and took notes on their beautiful findings in nature. The forest was a picturesque site to see.
After the tour, they found a nice area to eat lunch together. There was also a general store at which they could buy merchandise, ice cream, and many more things. The students went on to seine and caught things like crabs, puffer fish, and tiny fishes. Those who wanted to were allowed to go in the water after changing into bathing suits. Greeting the students by the water was a graceful swan.
The point of this trip was not only to prepare them for touring the fourth graders, but also to let the kids find peace in nature and reset their minds. It was supposed to be something to get them in touch with their surroundings and become more involved with the environment.
They ended their adventure with a nice walk on the beach to find purple shells enjoying the scenery and sounds of the waves. Overall, the field trip was a great success and all the kids had fun and enjoyed their time on Fire Island.
