Matt Macys Becomes an Eagle Scout

Lindenhurst has much to be proud of. On Tuesday October 24, Matthew Macys of the senior class of 2018 received the honorable rank of an Eagle Scout. He has received this monumental title after years of hard work especially in his Sandy relief efforts and his rebuilding and beautification of Shore Road in Lindenhurst.

Matthew Macys began his career as an boy scout at a young age. Since then he has climbed up the ladder through the ranks until reaching the highest honor there is, Eagle Scout. He received a lot of accolades and awards at the ceremony hosted in his honor on the 24th at the Lindenhurst V.F.W. Post located on North Delaware Avenue. This event was attended by around 100 people, among them being many People who worked with or in the offices of Congressmen, senators and assemblymen as well as local politicians such as the mayor of Lindenhurst, Michael Lovorata who had many nice things to say about the guest of honor.  

The ceremony lasting a little over an hour was filled with speeches from people who praised and admired all the hard work Matthew Macys has put into making this town a better place a leading his troop members on various adventures and local projects. Matthew was acknowledged for his feat of fundraising over $1,200 in order to fund his Shore Road project.  If great words weren’t enough Matt has also received a plethora of awards from various politicians.

Matt’s career as a scout began in 2005 when he became a Tiger Scout and by 2008 started attending meeting for his current troop, Troop 60.  He officially became a member in 2011 and was nominated quartermaster after only two years in the troop. He started his Eagle scout project at shore road in 2015. This included building and planting a garden, building picnic tables and cleaning up the asphalt on the beach that was polluting the water. When asked about how he feels about all of this he said, ”I’m proud for doing my part in the community to inspire people to take action and make a change.”

Besides his scouting career Matt Macys is also a very talented percussionist and is a member or multiple bands and ensembles both in and out of the Lindenhurst school district.  He is also active in various clubs such as, the National Honor Society, Science Club, Tri-M Music Honor Society where he served as treasurer and vice president, Percussion Ensemble where he served as president, Jazz band where he served as treasurer, and marching band where he served as percussion captain. He is also a part of two rock bands outside of school, the Brick Marshal Five and Jumbo Shrimp.

Matthew Macys intends on using all the leadership skills he has acquired in college and in the future. He will pursue a career in civil engineering after studying as the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has a neighborhood that’s proud to call him their own.
