On November 15th, Lindenhurst’s performing arts classes went to New York City to see the new Broadway musical Shucked. The production made its Broadway debut on April 4th of this year. It was nominated for 9 Tony awards including: best Direction, best Sound Design, best Original Score, best Book of a Musical, best Scenic Design, best Orchestrations, best Musical, and two nominations for best Featured Actor. Alex Newell, who plays Lulu in the musical, took home the prize for best featured actor, becoming the first openly nonbinary performer to win a Tony award.
The field trip was a fun filled day for all students involved. It began with them getting split into an instrumental group and a song and dance group. The instrumental group included band and orchestra students, and the song and dance group included chorus, dance, and drama students. The instrumental group took a coach bus to the city and stopped at a Broadway recording studio. There they learned a piece from the show Wicked, while being led by a Broadway conductor. The song and dance group took the train to the city and arrived at Penn Station. They walked to Pearl Studios, a popular Broadway dance studio, and learned the music and choreography to the opening number of Shucked. They were led by a Broadway pianist and the dance director of Shucked.
The two groups met up to enjoy a buffet lunch at Dave and Buster’s, then headed over to the Nederlander theater to enjoy the show. Shucked was full of jokes that kept the audience laughing. It had catchy songs and a heartfelt message. The cast was stacked with talented actors that put on amazing performances.
After the show, the two groups split up once again to begin their journey home. Everyone on the trip had a great time seeing Shucked on Broadway!
