5 Tips to KEEP Your Room in Order

Nathalia Rodriguez, Staff Writer

¨Clean your Room!¨ is probably the most spoken, or yelled phrase by any parent of a teenager.  Messy rooms are common among teenagers because they own a lot of things, have full schedules, and are searching for their“identity.” Clothes on the floor, cups and plates laying around, disorganized school books, cell phone charger wires tangled in a mess.  It can be difficult to tackle the mess, but the trick is to not let the room get out of hand once you have done the deep clean! Since most teenagers complain that they don’t  have enough time to clean their room, here are some tips to keep your room organized.

  1. Make your bed

This might seem like something obvious but many don’t take the time to do this simple task. According to a survey conducted by Hutch.com out of 68,000 people that took the survey 59% of people don’t make their beds, while 27% do. The other 12% pay someone to do it for them. The 59% that is more than half don’t do it! Why is this so important? This task is in the morning may seem tedious. But no matter how bad your day was you will come back to a made bed. Not only this but your bed is probably the biggest thing in your room having it nicely it made makes a great difference towards the room in its entirety.

  1. Have a home for everything

This means have a place for everything. Having a place for everything  allows you to keep organization not only materials but also your mental state. You no longer have to struggle searching for something because you will know where it is. Further reducing the stress of the search.  Knowing where to place your things is essential, saving you time when searching for things and or putting things away.

  1. Do only 10 minutes

If your struggle to keep your room clutter free. Organized you items and room for only ten minutes a day. Ten minutes is nothing compared to your 1440 minute day. If you manage this your weekdays will become much easier. Trust me!

  1. Keep what sparks joy

This is based on the Japanese organizational guru, Marie Kondo. Kondo is an organizing fanatic that has changed the lives of many with her organizing techniques. The basis of her method is to keep only what brings you joy. This might be a challenging process but it pays off. Kondo states that this act allows you to be satisfied with what you have and know what you should actually shop for based on this.  Keep items that make you feel confident of that define you. Kondo states this doesn’t mean getting rid of essential things things like school work but other things such as clothing and even books. To get rid of your items donate them, recycle or actually thrown them away. I do not give this method enough justice here but if you are interested in learning more read the book she wrote called The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It is definitely interesting and inspires anyone to go beyond these five tips even if you don’t follow her method.

  1. Shoes and clothes away

Shoes were there not supposed to be and clothes unfolded piling up somewhere. If this is common for you a way to change this is to simply put it away. If you just arrived from a long school or work day this might seem the easiest option but let me tell you that putting your things away makes it easier on your future self. Use a shoe organizer and have tip number two in place.
