Adoption is the only compassionate choice you can make when getting a pet. Pet adoption makes a bigger difference than many people realize. New animals come into shelters every day. About 7.6 million animals enter shelters each year, and about 2.7 million end up getting euthanized. Animals of all ages, all breeds, even animals that are perfectly healthy can end up at a shelter, some for days, some for years.
People often treat their pets irresponsibly, which leads to overcrowding at shelters, then leading to euthanization. Some people tend to give up their pets due to the time and effort needed to take care of them. Not only does this send the dog spiraling into depression and anxiety which can make them aggressive, but it can ruin their chance of ever being happy, cared for, and loved. An older animal has a lower chance of being adopted as statistics show, so when people give up their pets after years of having them, that pet can spend the rest of their life in a cage. Adopting saves lives.
Breeding is done in the most cruel ways which leads to health issues, and mutations in the offspring. Animals that are bought are often inbred which leads to genetic defects for the offspring and most just end up dying. A lot of offspring are born distorted, from breeders trying to get specific traits for that animal. Animals are forced to reproduce throughout their whole life, until they’re worn out and can’t anymore, and then breeders just get rid of them. If a puppy, or kitten is born, and they are ill and can’t be sold, the breeders will euthanize them, sometimes in a humane way, sometimes not. Yes, sometimes animals are born sick, but forceful breeding creates a MUCH higher chance of them being born that way. The breeding business is a lot worse than what is shown to the public. Shopping kills.
