With the majority of the year having already passed, most games this year have been a big split of good and bad. Some games may start good, but eventually lose people’s interest. Some examples are “Helldivers 2” by Arrowhead Game Studios or one that completely disappointed the fans in every way like “Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League” by Rocksteady Studios. We are left with “Black Myth Wukong,” developed and published by Game Science, an action role-playing game based on the Chinese novel Journey To the West.
The game was much anticipated and received well by fans. The overall style, and mechanics of the game, were similar to the successful Soulsborne games like “Edlen Ring,” “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice,” and “Bloodborne”. With unique and diverse styles of bosses and enemies in the game, it stands out from the rest of the games rolled out so far this year. You play as a monkey that has the goal of reviving Son Wukong from the prologue battle against Guangzhi. The game has multiple endings and an epic final boss fight. This game has been very successful, having climbed to having one of the highest peak player count with around 2 million players, joining games like “PUBG,” “Counter-strike 2” and “Palworld,” which have a peak player count in the millions. The ratings of this game has been a good average of 8 and above from Steam reviews, IGN and Metacritic.
“Black Myth Wukong” succeeds because of fans’ anticipation, along with developers properly delivering the fans even more than what was to be expected. The game has beaten and taken over massive triple A games from recent years. This is impressive because GameScience who developed the game, are indie-developers, and the game was published by GameScience. This game was a massive success, and a win for indie-developers in general, by showing the potential in talent.
