Hurricane Helene had a very dramatic impact on North Carolina and Atlantic Canada.
Many roads, bridges, cities and houses were not able to withstand the amount of damage Helene brought to them. This hurricane occurred from September 24th to the 29th.
Unfortunately, there were 200+ deaths across 6 states. After this hurricane, many houses were left without power and flooding. Due to all of this flooding and destruction, it was hard for help to get to those who needed it.
Helene was a category 4 storm, where the wind speeds were up to 140 mph and rains up to 20 feet above ground. The path of the storm was hard to determine due to it constantly changing. The heavy amount of rain caused a lot of flooding in basements and garages. People were delivering food, supplies, meals and equipment to those who needed it.
People that were being interviewed said that you could “smell death in the air.” Many families were left completely devastated by the loss of their loved ones during this horrific storm. Families still have hope to find them alive underneath all of the damage. Communities now have to pay high amounts in expenses for damages.
The current death tolls, according to CNN, are:
North Carolina- 117 people
South Carolina- 48 people
Georgia- 33 people
Florida- 20 people
Tennessee- 12 people
Virginia-2 people
