Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, who first began releasing music as Lizzy Grant in 2008, is now known as Lana Del Rey, a famous singer and songwriter. She writes alternative-music, indie pop, and psychedelic rock.
She was born on June 21st, 1985 in Manhattan, New York, raised in Lake Placid. Throughout her childhood, Rey loved to sing, In 2006, she entered a songwriting competition. She didn’t win, but a judge on the panel helped her create a demo, which gave her the confidence to explore her talent publicly. She began her career by singing at open mic nights and club gigs.
She released her first album in 2010, followed by her debut single in 2011 “Video Games.” Her album “Born To Die” followed shortly, spiking her ratings. Her music was streamed all around the world. Her current most streamed song is “Summertime Sadness” with 1.6 billion streams in 2024.
Lana Del Rey’s music explores problems, how we cope with them, and the choice of never moving on. Lana’s lyrics show that it’s okay to not be okay, and that you are not alone in what you’re experiencing. Lana Del Rey went through a lot of trauma as a child. Due to this, she made it her goal to help people who are struggling just like she did. Lana had a very toxic relationship with her mother, turning her into an alcoholic from ages 13-18. She was then sent away to Kent School.
Lana Del Rey tried to commit suicide when she was 15. She explained that without a support system, while being in a place she dreaded, she couldn’t take it anymore. Fortunately, she survived. Her suicide attempt helped open the eyes of the people around her, which turned her life around. Lana Del Rey sets up fundraisers in forms of concerts, donating every dollar she earns.
Lana Del Rey strongly believes in karma, and says that what you do always comes back to you. This is why she always is kind towards others.
