McDonald’s is a beloved fast food chain restaurant. The first McDonald’s opened up in 1940 by Maurice and Ron McDonald in San Bernardino, California. Mcdonald’s is known for their cheap prices, with their food being affordable to many. In 1963, Mcdonald’s sold over a billion hamburgers! In 1967, the first McDonald’s restaurant opened outside the USA, in Canada.
Recently, much of the media has focused on stories about the McDonald’s Quarter Pounder. Many have said online that a recent E. coli outbreak comes from this food item. Outbreaks have occurred in multiple states across the United States including Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico and more, with at least 75 people falling ill. Many people on social media are concerned for their health after seeing the rumors that circulate around the burger. McDonald’s removed it from their menu temporarily until they figured out the cause of the outbreak.
NBC News has released statements saying the E. coli outbreak isn’t coming from the patty, but rather the slivered onions. All of the locations suffering from an E. coli outbreak had one thing in common: where they got their slivered onions. Their source for the vegetable is Taylor Farms in Colorado Springs. Taylor Farms had sold the silvered ring onions to multiple states to over 900 restaurants.
The strain of E. coli being spread is called O157:H7. This strain produces a strong toxin that could damage the lining of the small intestine. Taylor Farms has called for a recall on their silver onions and has asked restaurants who have received the product to destroy it.
All of the McDonald’s lovers out there all can rest easy now knowing that it’s safe to eat the patties. Hopefully, the outbreak is controlled and won’t cause anybody else to fall ill. Now, everyone can enjoy their McDonald’s Quarter Pounders once again!
