This past week, Cuba had a massive power outage. This outage left millions of Cubans across the country without any electricity whatsoever. There is nowhere near enough fuel to run all of the power stations across the country.
On top of that, Cuba recently went through a major hurricane that caused much destruction. Hurricane Oscar sadly killed 6 people. The heavy rains and strong winds left the city of Baracoa with over 1,000 home damages.
From the recent catastrophic events, many Cubans have been stocking up on charcoal, gas, fire wood, and more. So many of these items are out of stock to the point where you can barely find them. Families are scared and are trying their best to provide for their loved ones. People have resorted to burning anything they can find on the side of the road for heat, light, and food. For the time being, this has become the new normal for most Cubans.
So many families have not been able to eat for days on end from having no way of cooking their food. The electrical infrastructure is also very poor. The Cuban minister stated that “normal services would be resumed soon,” but that was far from the truth. In the past, the country was only able to supply just about 60% to 70% of the nationwide demand for electricity.
The country is currently covered in complete darkness. People are saying that the National Electricity Grid isn’t going to be up for quite a long time. The darkness is speculated to last more than a year, give or take.
