The California fires started on January 7, 2025. They are called the Palisades fire and Eaton fire. The Palisades fire has been the least contained one, and the Eaton is most dangerous, which resulted in 17 deaths. These fires have been ranked as the deadliest wildfires in California history.
Authorities think that these fires were started by falling power lines. Firefighters and Volunteers are having a hard time containing the fire because of how quickly it’s spreading. A strong mountain wave wind event, averaging 80-100 miles per hour gusts, spread the fires fast.
California is very dry and windy, making it more likely to catch fire. California has many tornadoes a year, but with these fires, they’ve had multiple “firenados” that spin up and burn everything as they go.
The fire started in Angeles National Forest, and has spread to Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. Throughout the few weeks since the fires started, 27 people have been killed, over 41,000 acres burned, and over 10,000 homes burned to the ground. People are being evacuated as the fire is turning into a ring of fire that’s getting closer and closer to closing. Many people have left behind their pets, and organizations have formed to go in and save them from the blazes. Shelters throughout different states have been taking in animals rescued from California. Hopefully these fires will be stopped soon, before everything’s gone.
