The 97th Academy Awards was held on March 2, 2025. The awards were given out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The awards recognize artistic and technical merit in film achievements.
Anora, directed by Sean Baker was awarded five Oscars coming out as the biggest winner of the event. Sean Baker’s outstanding achievement of winning four Oscars in one night ties him with Walt Disney’s record of the most Oscars won by an individual in one year. Baker won all four awards for the same movie while Walt Disney in 1954 won for four different movies.
Zoe Saldaña made history at the awards by winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez, making her the first American of Dominican heritage to be awarded an Oscar. In the speech she gave while accepting her award, she honored her immigrant heritage. She stated, “I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hardworking hands.”
