The New York Mets opened up their season on March 27th against the Astros and the newly named Dalkin Park(formally Minute Maid Park).
As I’ve stated before, many Mets fans’ biggest worry going into this season was the lack of pitching depth and quality pitching overall. Sean Manaea went down with an injury, newly acquired Frankie Montas is already injured, the bullpen is not young by any means, and ace Kodai Senga has had major injury troubles in the past.
After having an immaculate spring training, Clay Holmes got the opening day start for the New York Mets.
Holmes did surprisingly well, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs in 4.2 innings pitched. The Mets ended up losing that game 3-1.
I will say that the bullpen has looked fantastic so far this year, giving up zero runs thus far, even though every single one of the pitchers was born during the prehistoric age.
The starting pitching is looking solid too. Holmes gave up two runs, Tylor Megill, who pitched on Friday, gave up 1 run, and Griffin Canning, who pitched Saturday, gave up 2.
The pitching has not been the problem, the only complaint I have is the starters not being able to go past 5 innings. I don’t know if they are getting taken out early due to injury concerns, but it is worrisome.
The real problem thus far is the offense.
The Mets had a combined 5 runs scored against the Astros in the first series of the year. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto did not do their jobs with Soto striking out to end the game with runners in scoring position and Lindor hitting a sac fly in a situation where a base hit was needed.
The Mets have a history of getting off to slow starts, but if they want to win the World Series they need to start winning games earlier in the season.
Luckily the Mets pitching is holding up their end, but will the offense?
When the Mets acquired Juan Soto, it was a sign that they want to win as soon as this year. But as I stated previously, the Mets cannot keep getting off to slow starts if they want to be a threatening team. The Dodgers started off 5-0, which is why they are the reigning champions. They win early on.
Overall, it’s early in the season, everyone is still trying to find their footing, but it doesnt change the fact that the Mets do this every year. They have to start winning in April.
