For the first two months of the year, the New York Mets were playing the best I have seen them play in my lifetime. Francisco Lindor was hitting incredible and playing Gold Glove defense, Pete Alonso was playing otherworldly, batting above .350 and hitting home runs like it was a tee ball game.
But then suddenly everything came to a halt.
Lindor, Alonso, and the Mets came back down to Earth after an otherworldly first two months of the year. They currently sit at 2nd place in the NL East with a record of 33-21 and are set to verse the White Sox for another two games and then the Colorado Rockies after that for a 3 game series, the 2 worst teams in the league.
Lindor is batting a competitive .272 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI while Alonso is batting .292 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI, both well above league average for a “slump”. That shows the state of the Mets, this team slump has not affected them too much, but only enough to make it noticeable. The Mets are still tied for the second best record in the National League.
The series losses to the Yankees and Red Sox definitely didn’t feel good as a Mets fan, the pitching seemed to have become less reliable and the offense completely fell apart. But the series win against the Dodgers this past weekend rejuvenated the team going into the easiest week of the season.
The fact that Lindor, Alonso, and even Soto are going through slumps at the moment and are still hitting above league average is extremely impressive and gives me hope for how the rest of this season will pan out.
I trust this Mets team, once Juan Soto figures it out, the offense learns to be consistent, and Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas come back from injuries, this Mets team has a chance to be one of the best in the league if not the single best in the league, and hopefully win a World Series. It may seem like a lot is needed to win the chip, but I don’t believe that its anything the Mets cannot accomplish.
