Lindenhurst Varsity Football Does The Unimaginable
Bulldogs Become Long Island Champions
December 7, 2017
For the first time in Lindenhurst history, the Lindenhurst Varsity Football team was able to win the Long Island Championship (LIC). This has never been done in the history of Lindenhurst. The team had multiple games leading up to this game where they played relentlessly and never let up on any teams leaving them with a perfect 12-0 record. Throughout the regular season the Bulldogs went 8-0, and as a result, they were the number one seed throughout the playoffs.
To begin the playoffs, the Lindenhurst Bulldogs defeated the Commack Cougars with an outstanding 38-0 outcome. It was a great way for the team to begin the road to their main goal, the LIC. A shutout against any team in the playoffs is a great accomplishment regardless of whether they are a number 2 seed or a number 8 seed like commack was. Throughout the game, the Commack Cougars gave it their best effort; but unfortunately for them it was not enough to stop the desire of the Lindenhurst Bulldogs to win the LIC.
After this astonishing victory over Commack, the boys prepared to take on the Connetquot Thunderbirds. Lindenhurst emerged from this game winning with a 35-21 lead, and again there was an outstanding contribution from the whole team. Looking out to the stands seeing all the support from their home town for their very last home field game was inspirational. It was also very emotional for some of the seniors especially since it would be the last time they step foot on that field while suited up for a game. It was a spectacular thing for not only the seniors, but the whole team in general giving the team a chance to make history and become the first 11-0 football team for Lindenhurst.
After the crushing defeat for the Connetquot Thunderbirds, Lindenhurst entered the Suffolk County Championship (SCC). The Bulldogs, who are seeded number one, face of the Colonials from William Floyd, who are seeded number two, to see who truly is the best Suffolk County football team. The game was played at the Stony Brook football stadium and both schools had waves of fans flowing into the stadium to cheer them on. It was an intense game and both sides of the ball played extremely well for both schools however only one team could emerge victorious. The Lindenhurst Bulldogs had played tough for the full 48 minutes of true high school football and were able to conquer the WIlliam Floyd Colonials with an outstanding score of 35-12. There was an outstanding performance by players on both of the teams in this game, but unfortunately for William Floyd, the Bulldogs were just too good. On to the LIC for the Lindenhurst Bulldogs where they face off the notorious Oceanside Sailors from Nassau County
The time has come, something all teams dream of all season but only two get to experience. The LIC, it is Lindenhurst’s first appearance since 2014 and both teams have worked extremely hard for this time to come. A full season’s hard work is all determined right here. Will your team walk off that field with regrets or will you be walking out holding up that trophy that every school so badly desires to bring home each year? Two undefeated teams battling it out to see who is the best in the island, to see what team will triumph and which will fold over and leave with the thought that they were so close to clutching victory in their hands. Lindenhurst vs. Oceanside, Bulldogs vs. Sailors, Suffolk vs. Nassau, who will bring home the trophy is the team that plays the hardest and gives it all they have for a full 48 minutes and nothing else.
The game was long and played hard by both teams; however, the game was dragged out after the coach of Oceanside starts the debate weather the football Lindenhurst for kicking was illegal for high school football or not. It took about 20 minutes with just about 4 minutes left in the first half and finally the referees ruled on the side of Lindenhurst and the game could continue. After halftime it was all smooth going and the last 24 minutes of the game was played tough leaving the final score 40-23. Lindenhurst had done it, the first time in the history of the town that the Lindenhurst football team had won the Long Island Championship let alone holding their perfect undefeated season in tact.
There were tears of joy shed by the whole team and after there was a huge parade led by fire trucks waiting at town hall for the arrival of the Champions. Congratulations to Coach Lombardo, Coach Frole, Coach Frole and Coach Sinicropi and the whole team for a job well done! Lindenhurst couldn’t be any prouder of you guys.
