Hype Builds for Star Wars: The Last Jedi

For many people, the greatest escape from reality is going to see the adventures set in “ a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.” Since the original blockbuster aired in theaters on May 25, 1977, millions of people have come to worship this space fantasy we know as Star Wars. Now everyone is in excitement as the newest film is scheduled to be released in theaters this Friday.

Star Wars the Last Jedi is the 8th installment in the Star Wars film franchise and the 2nd installment of the planned sequel trilogy. The film stars Daisy Ridley as the mysterious force sensitive Rey, Mark Hamill as the exiled Luke Skywalker, Adam Driver as the powerful Kylo Ren, John Boyega as the ex-stormtrooper Finn, Oscar Isaac as Ressentiance Pilot Poe Dameron, and Carrie Fisher in her final film appearance as General Leia Organa. When asked about the film by ABC 7 Director Rian Johnson stated that,”It’s the middle chapter, like the 2nd act of a movie, everyone gets challenged and goes through it. And we’re going to go to some dark places.”

The film revolves around Rey’s training with Luke Skywalker following the events of the previous installment Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Throughout the movie, the ex-Jedi Kylo Ren will be attempting to turn Rey to the dark side as part of a plan made by the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke.  Meanwhile Finn, Poe, and Leia will help lead the rebel group known as the Resistance to victory against the 1st order military faction.

This film took a tremendous time of time and effort to do pre production, the actual filming process, and than the post production. According to Walt Disney Studios, The Last Jedi is expected to dominate box offices for this opening weekend with over $425 million in ticket sales alone. This will likely not be as big a success in the box office as  The Force Awakens was.

This film will also be the last appearance of the late Carrie Fisher.  Fisher sadly passed on December 26, 2016, but already completed all her filming prior to that. Fisher has inspired millions of people worldwide with her iconic performance as Princess Leia in the original trilogy and this latest film will be dedicated to her. According to Rian Johnson, “After all, she understood Leia’s importance more than anyone. She was so conscious of her place in culture and what she meant to female fans.”
