Lend a Helping Hand This Holiday
January 2, 2018
It’s the season of giving! This festive time of year unfortunately means cold, brutal times for some. Here are some ways to help others this holiday season.
- In many classrooms, teachers have been collecting non-perishable food donations for the local food pantry. If you don’t have the opportunity to bring them in, don’t worry. There are many local areas in need of donations. In fact, a statistic from Dosomething.org states, “72% of food banks do not feel as though they are able to adequately meet the needs of their communities without adjusting the amount of food distributed.” Evangel Church of God on W John Street, and Long Island Cares on North Wellwood Avenue have pantries for anyone struggling.
- Another way to contribute locally is by donating clothing that you no longer wear to thrift stores. Thrift stores are very necessary for people who cannot afford expensive clothing. You can drop off your unwanted clothing at American Salvation on Little East Neck Road.
- Furry friends would like your company this winter. For animal lovers, a great way to volunteer is by helping out at an animal shelter. The required age at most shelters is 16. If you are too young or unable to devote the time, you can donate unopened food or new toys for the animals.
- We thank our freedom to the millions of men and women who have protected our country. The holidays can be a lonely time for those away from home. They deserve the utmost respect and a happy, safe holiday. To lift the spirits of those who give up so much for us, you can send a card.
