Insidious: The Last Key

Nicole Cardino, Staff Writer

As you may know, Insidious is a chain of horror movies that people die to see. The newest addition to this series was the last one (hence the name The Last Key) and everyone is upset because of it. This movie however, was a great way to end the series.  Insidious: The Last Key is a solid finale to the Insidious franchise that gives series lead Lin Shaye the chance to take a graceful final bow,” said Sandy Schaefer at Screen Rant. Many believe it’s  a good ending to the Insidious series, but it is not very spine-chilling and extremely horrifying. It’s more an essential “key” to finish off the series.

The story for this movie is very interesting and keeps you wanting to know more. Elaine, the protagonist, receives a call from a man who believes his house is haunted. When he tells her the address of this house, Elaine quickly realizes that this is the house she grew up in. She begin to have flashbacks of her abusive father and all of the paranormal activity she remembers that occurred within that house. This house is just behind a penitentiary where her father worked and was extremely eerie looking. Whenever Elaine revealed that she had seen a “ghost” or anything of the sorts, her father would punish her in extremely harsh ways. Due to the past, she is reluctant to go and help this man, but then becomes curious and decides to go. Her two “helpers” decide to tag along. Upon arriving to the house, this eerieness is brought back along with some more specific memories. These are triggered especially due to the fact that the house looks exactly the same from the 50’s when she left it.

The best part of this movie is the fact that Elaine reconnects with her brother. The actress who plays Elaine, Lin Shaye, played this part with such passion and dedication to her role that you could notice that she wasn’t vulnerable or strong; she let a little bit of both come to the surface. This allowed us to really get a glimpse of what Elaine is really like and how these demons can’t hold her back, but her memories might be able to. The special effects were also amazing for this movie and made every single aspect look so real. The makeup helped a lot with this aspect of the movie.
