Lindenhurst Varsity Wrestling Taking Down the Competition

Nicole Cardino, Staff Writer

Lindenhurst Varsity Wrestling “threw-down” the competition this season with 10 all league wrestlers, four All County Wrestlers and 3rd placement in league tournament. There were even a few 8th graders on the team: Nick Scarindino, Jake Trovato, Joe Degregorio and Jairo Caceres. The a stand out 9th grader who was an All County Wrestler and an All League Wrestler, Jack Winey, has had everyone talking. He is in the 182 weight class and is the only freshman to become an All League Wrestler this season, nevermind the fact that he exceeded this and even became an All County Wrestler. Only four boys on the team became all county, and no one expected a freshman to do so well in his first year on Lindenhurst Varsity Wrestling.

Out of the 10 all county wrestlers, there were two seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and as stated previously, only one freshman. The seniors included Tahirhan Ozturk and James Henn who clearly ended their high school wrestling career with a bang. Fans are expecting big things from the senior class next year as there were so many juniors to receive All League such as Sean Lennon, Adam Quintanilla, Ryan Meisner and Nick Gianelli. Three All League sophomores is a great accomplishment for the school. These three were Edwin Contreras, Kieth Renick and Jeff Perez.

“It was definitely an honor for Lindenhurst that we had four all county wrestlers; especially Jack Winey as he’s also a freshman,” said Aodhan Williams, a freshman on the team. Aodhan knows the struggle of trying to achieve the rank of all county and is very proud of his teammates. These were senior Tahirhan Ozturk, juniors Sean Lennon and Ryan Meisner as well as freshman Jack Winey were the ones to do this. This didn’t come easy to them, obviously as only four boys won the amount of matches to achieve all county. They worked extremely hard to win these matches; they weight trained and worked out everyday to achieve this goal that every hard working player on the team was striving towards.

Junior Varsity Wrestling had a great season as well this year and the students on that team tried just as hard as the Varsity athletes. The wrestlers really showed their strengths this year and fans can’t wait to see the next year’s new athletes who can contribute their own hard work to the team. Next year’s wrestlers will be even bigger, better and stronger.
