Super Bowl LIV Recap
February 6, 2020
This year’s Super Bowl was one to remember. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers proved that they were indeed the top two teams in the NFL and that they both deserved to play in the NFL’s big game.
For the third straight game, in the playoffs that is, the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a comeback. The Chiefs erased a 24-0 deficit against the Houston Texans in the divisional round and a 17-7 deficit against the Tennessee Titans in the conference championship. They continued this trend in the Super Bowl by erasing a 10 point, second half, San Francisco lead.
For the majority of the first half, the San Francisco 49ers played their game and controlled the ball with their defense and strong rushing attack. The San Francisco defense kept Patrick Mahomes in check and even managed to pressure him into throwing an interception.
However, the Chiefs managed to keep up with the 49ers and the first half finished at a 10-10 tie. The San Francisco 49ers came out of the half strong and jumped out to a lead that grew as large as 10.
They were only able to keep this lead until the last 10 minutes of the fourth quarter when everything started to go down hill. All in all, the San Francisco 49ers totaled 59 yards in the fourth quarter and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo froze under the bright lights. Garoppolo went 3 of 11 for 36 yards and an interception.
The opposite happened for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes who picked up his game during the downfall of Garoppolo. In the fourth quarter alone, Mahomes went 10 of 17 for 141 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one interception.
Those two Mahomes touchdowns turned out to be the difference in this game as they were the 14 points that erased the 10 point deficit. The second touchdown came late in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. This was a major blow to the San Francisco 49ers who lost control of a game that they had in their grasp for a majority of.
In the end, it did not come down to who had the better defense, which was clearly the 49ers, it came down to who had the most dominant quarterback of the two. That team happened to be the Chiefs who have Patrick Mahomes who is miles ahead of the 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo as far as pure skill goes.
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs came back and won Super Bowl LIV 31-20. Damien Williams sealed the victory with a rushing touchdown after the San Francisco 49ers failed to answer the Chiefs game winning touchdown.
This game was seen by many as one of the best Super Bowls in the last few years. Opinions include that the game last year was nowhere near as entertaining as this year and I agree with that. With this win, the Chiefs could potentially be beginning a dynasty as long as they keep the core around Patrick Mahomes intact and continue improving their defense.
