Kendall and Kylie Cultural Appropriation

It’s never easy constantly being in the limelight. Especially for Kendall and Kylie Jenner, who were made famous for solely doing absolutely nothing. At least they aren’t wasting their fame and trying to make themselves useful in the fashion and makeup world; Kylie with her infamous makeup line and Kendall’s modeling career. However, their efforts don’t end there, they have decided to collaborate on a line of clothing that to many people seem suggestive. With this, the Jenner’s have been accused by the media on cultural appropriation, not once, not twice, but three times!

Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of the elements of one culture by members of another culture. Often the true meanings of these cultural elements are lost, thus seeming disrespectful to people of that origin. Regarding Kendall and Kylie Jenner, let’s start with the first instance. Right after the release of their controversial Tupac x Biggie x Jenner t-shirts, they were hit with a wave of hate and a followed up lawsuit. After hit with this cultural appropriation reality check, Kendall instantly issued an apology, which really didn’t do much. Many fans came out harshly saying, “What gives these people the right to slab their white faces on top of legends.” This wasn’t even the worse of the hate. However, when you have to constantly be reminded to not disgrace the black culture; it seems they got what was coming to them.

Two of the most recent instances of the Jenners is yet again, disappointing their fans, is in their latest release of a plaid shirt in a suggestive photo shoot and a hand bag with the design of a Chinese take out box. Regarding their plaid shirt, many people have accused the Jenner’s of using the style of Latina chulas to make profit. Who would want to be perceived as a Latina gangster, unless you are one? It’s just wrong that many people aren’t noticing that this is unacceptable; making fun of someone else’s culture isn’t cool. Lastly, let’s address this horrendous excuse for a handbag, the “Lee Clutch.” First of all, the merely name of this bag is enough evidence to accuse the Jenners of cultural appropriation. Do we really have to remind the Jenner’s to not make handbags that look like chinese take out?

All and all, the Jenner’s will be Jenner’s and attempt to keep their name in the spotlight even in a negative connotation. Now all we have to do is sit back and see what other culture the Jenner’s want to stereotype.
