The Decrease in Fencing
February 14, 2021
As the winter sports season comes to an end, the students outgrow their time in their activities at least for the year. Seniors are especially affected by this inevitable end of time, not to mention the shorten seasons this year.
Unfortunately some sports are running dry on people, especially fencing. When you hear of fencing you may think of deadly competitions that result in bleeding, bruising, and/or severe injuries, but obviously a high school sport wouldn’t allow something like that.
Olivia O’Hara states, “The risk is so minimal, it’s so much more risky to play Football. The majority of injuries are pulled muscles and sprained ankles due to falling off of the strip, (look to the sixth paragraph for description) and to be honest you’re more likely to hurt yourself in track like that”
Fencing isn’t just chaos either. There are specific instructions for actions like walking, lunging, attacking, etc. However don’t get discouraged, seemingly complex doesn’t always mean difficult. Some kids joined this year and they feel welcome and equivalent (of course not in talent, but the newbies manage) in battle.
Since there are so few kids, the group is able to become very close. So much so, that all of the kids became heartbroken at the thought of the season ending. The team is very welcoming and is always hoping for new people to join and expand the group.
The strip isn’t what the word sounds like, it’s actually a assembled pair of machines used to create a makeshift battlefield, including wires connecting the fencers to everything, a scoreboard, the pathway, and a piece connecting another write from the back on each side.
Battles are prioritized but not in the way of if the team loses they are punished. The team isn’t afraid to stray away from seriousness. Even one response to a statement of encouragement to come is “If you don’t come you are stinky”.
There are 21 kids participating in fencing and 10 are seniors. Just take in those numbers, only two four kids joined this year and only two are freshmen. However one of them is a junior, one is a sophomore, and the other two are freshmen. Luckily all if not most of the kids playing plan to stay all four years. On the other hand that’s still a horrendous decline.
This fact was honed in to the team with the celebratory Senior Night which is a party for the seniors of the fencing team hosted by the individuals underneath them. If you are interested in learning more about that, stay tuned for the next article!
