Top 5 Trade Destinations for Deshaun Watson
March 8, 2021
Quarterback Deshaun Watson is unhappy with the current situation in Houston. Watson has made it clear several times that he wants to be traded. Watson met with head coach Dave Culley and told him that he wants to be traded. Watson would be willing to hold out of the season if Houston did not trade him. These are the top trade destinations if Houston were to trade the star quarterback.
5.New England Patriots
Mock trade: CB Stephon Gilmore, LB Chase Winovich, 2021 and 2022 first round pick
The New England Patriots missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 in 2020. The Patriots lost Tom Brady in free agency this past off-season. However the Patriots signed 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton. Cam showed to be promising for the
Patriots in their week two game against the Seahawks. Cam threw for 397 and one touchdown. Cam played in four games this season where he threw for under 100 yards passing. He threw for only eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Deshaun would most definitely succeed under coach Belichick. New England has $62 million in cap space so they can sign a wide receiver to help out Deshaun.
4. Carolina Panthers
Mock trade: RB Christian McCaffrey, 2021 and 2022 first round pick, 2021 second round pick
Deshaun Watson would have a great receiving duo in Curtis Samuel and DJ Moore. DJ Moore had a 1,000 yard season last year with Teddy Bridgewater as his quarterback. Curtis Samuel had 851 yards while missing one game. With Mike Davis in the back field this offense could do a lot of damage. For this trade to happen Carolina would likely have to give up arguably the best running back in the league, Christian McCaffrey. Mike Davis showed to be promising last season when McCaffrey missed most of the season.
3.Chicago Bears
Mock trade: RB Tarik Cohen, LB Roquon Smith 2021,2022 and 2023 first round pick
The Bears surprisingly made the playoffs last season but were eliminated in the first round by the Saints. There is speculation that Bears quarterback Mitch Tribusky may be on his way out of Chicago. The Bears drafted Tribusky in the 2017 draft over Watson. Wide receiver Allen Robinson is set to be a free agent this offseason, but if the Bears were to pull off a trade for Deshaun Watson, Robinson may resign and stay with the team. With Khalil Mack leading the defense and Watson leading the offense, Chicago has potential to make a run deep into the playoffs.
2.New York Jets
Mock trade: QB Sam Darnold, DT Quinnen Williams, 2021 and 2022 first round pick, 2022 second round pick
Deshaun Watson asked the organization to interview Robert Salah for their head coaching job. The team never interviewed him and he signed with the Jets. This could be a fresh start for both the Jets organization and Deshaun Watson. The Jets would not be contenders immediately, since they are still in a rebuilding stage. They still have multiple positions they need to address in free agency and the draft. Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is set to be a free agent. Watson and Godwin would be a nightmare for NFL defenses.
1.San Francisco 49ers
Mock trade:DE Nick Bosa, QB Jimmy Garoppolo, 2021 and 2022 first round pick
The 49ers were less than ten minutes away from a super bowl win against the Chiefs. They crumbled in the final minutes losing to the game 31-20. The 49ers and their fans were very optimistic for the next season. From the start of the season, nothing seemed to go their way. The 49ers had most of their starters miss most of the season with injuries. George Kittle, Richard Sherman and Raheem Mostert all missed time due to injury. Jimmy Garoppolo only played a handful of games while battling a high ankle sprain. The 49ers would be the best fit for Watson since he wants to go to a contending team. With the 49ers returning to full strength there is no doubt they will succeed with Watson at quarterback. Watson paired up with George Kittle would be almost impossible for defenses to stop.
