With the music industry’s growth, along with it being easier to produce and make music from your home, more and more artists are releasing singles, EPs, and albums. However, with this rise in artists, more questions arise with how many people want to be in this industry. One of those questions include if its better for an artist to release an album with no promotion, or to promote an album and then release their music.
The more standard approach to an artist releasing an album is through a lot of promotion. You can use any artist to prove the success behind this kind of release. A new artist uses this technique constantly with her singles and album is Ice Spice. Ice Spice is always promoting her newly released singles and currently is teasing a new album this year. Promotion is often seen on her social media platforms, where she consistently posts about new music. She does this by presenting snippets of new songs that she plans to release. This method is the most common since it makes people aware of when a new single or album will be released.
However, there is a different approach that other artists use rather than standard promotion. This tactic is an unexpected release. The unexpected release of an album or single is a lot different to pull off. To the public, it is more of a shock for an artist to hide the fact they’ve been working on a project for so long. Someone that pulled this off beautifully is Beyoncé. Beyoncé using this technique changed the way an album could be released entirely. She released one of her albums with no promotion behind it, and even had a music video for every song on this album. This idea is amazing to complete considering how often secret projects get leaked on the internet. It’s so common for a new song from an artist or whole a new project to get spoiled just from word of mouth, especially on the internet since everything posted is permanent. To have an artist as big as Beyoncé pull this task off in 2013 and still have debut music that was #1 on Billboard is a massive accomplishment. Beyoncé was not the first to do this. Other artists before her, such as Radiohead in 2008, successfully used this technique.
These different approaches really depend on how the artists want their work to be presented to the public. Whether releases are done with tons of promotion behind it, or no promotion at all, music can still have to opportunity to become popular.

I really liked how you talked about how real life artists have used these approaches when releasing their music!! It was also good to see both the pros and cons of each approach.

I like that you referenced well known artists and their work to explain the difference between a promoted release and an unexpected release.
