The Lindenhurst Snapper Derby

The+Lindenhurst+Snapper+Derby

Every year here in Lindenhurst, the Rotary Club hosts an interesting and fun event, the Snapper Derby. The event takes place at the Village Marina, which is located on South Wellwood Avenue. What can you expect from this event? What is the prize? Let’s find out.

The Lindenhurst Snapper Derby usually takes place in late summer, around August. On the day of the event, registration begins at 8:00 a.m, and fishing lasts from 9:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m. The target species are Snapper, which are baby Bluefish. At the event, there are no poppers or lures allowed, only live bait.

If you are planning on attending this event but do not know what lures, poppers, or live bait is, here is a proper explanation. Lures are something that imitate a fish’s prey. A typical lure for snapper are spoons, which shine in the water, and by far away look like a real fish. Poppers technically are lures that are used on topwater. The popper causes commotion on the top of the water, which gets a fish’s attention. Live bait is real fish. Even though the word “live” is in the name, most of the time this bait consists of dead fish. This is for the better, as live fish can cause a bit of trouble handling.

As for the prizes, the person with the biggest fish caught gets $100. The person with the second most fish caught gets a reward of $50. Therefore, there are some pretty good prizes that come along with participating in this event. Whether you want to earn some money, like fishing, or just want a good challenge, the Lindenhurst Snapper Derby has it all!
