The New York Mets are officially back in the Wild Card race after a difficult start to the season. At the end of May the Mets’ record was 24-33. Many fans gave up, the team was already planning to sell at the trade deadline, but then the Mets turned it all around.
Since June 12th, the Mets have the best record by a team, with a record of 52-29. While many fans believe the Mets’ success came from Grimace throwing out the first pitch. It’s due to the bounceback seasons of important players, and a surprise addition to the team who provided a spark.
Jose Iglesias is a Major League veteran and a part time musician as of this year. He signed a Minor League deal with the Mets after not playing in 2023. Nobody expected anything from a veteran who hasn’t been a key part of an organization since the mid 2010s.
After a shaky start to the season, all hope seemed to be lost. But Jose Iglesias released a song titled OMG. Since Iglesias’ call up in late May, the Mets have a record of 57-33, and his song has been the team’s rally cry and his walk up song ever since.
Jose Iglesias hasn’t been the only player involved in the Mets recent success. Shortstop Francisco Lindor and the entire Mets pitching staff have been fantastic and carried the team on their backs since the beginning of the summer.
Francisco Lindor has finally become the player the Mets have paid 341 million dollars for. As of September 15th he is batting .271 with 31 home runs and 86 RBIs. He also has 27 stolen bases. He is on pace for his second 30-30 season of his career and second in a row. He is also not far behind Shohei Ohtani for National League MVP.
The Mets as a team have an ERA of 3.74 since June 12th, which is really good for a team that doesn’t have a lot of notable pitchers on it. A lot of veterans and new guys stepped up to form a pitching staff that has been unstoppable recently.
The New York Mets are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the 3rd Wild Card spot and it keeps going back and forth. Some days the Mets are leading by 1 game and some days the Braves are leading by a game. The series at the end of the year when they verse each other is going to be the deciding factor of whether or not the Mets make the playoffs.
As a Mets fan, I’m hoping they can keep this winning streak going and make the playoffs because this team is magical. I believe the New York Mets can win it all this year.
