Long Island is as old as the United States itself, and with that comes history. Our extensive history also involves the creepy stories and haunted places on Long Island. In preparation for Halloween, what are these stories? Where are these horrific places?
- Camp Hero in Montauk may not sound familiar, but the story is interesting. Teddy Roosevelt and his soldiers, named the Rough Riders, were quarantined here during the Spanish-American war. The Native-Americans were also ambushed in this Montauk plaza. It is said to be haunted by the spirits of both Native Americans and of the dying soldiers. This spot also was used as a reference for the Stranger Things series.
- The Country House Restaurant is an old colonial house in Stony Brook that is supposedly haunted. It’s meant to be haunted by Annette Williamson. She was murdered after welcoming British soldiers into her home. Visitors report hearing noises and lights flickering.
- The Lady of the Lake in Ronkonkoma is a statue of a Native American princess. The princess is said to have been murdered on her wedding day by a New-England settler. The body was never found, but her spirit is seen on the lake crying and moaning.
- Sagtikos Manor in Bayshore was occupied by the British and even once hosted George Washington himself. The last owners of the house died in 1900, and it is said that the house has been haunted since. Tables moving, banging on doors, turning doorknobs.. all of those stereotypical ghost things.
- The Old Burial Hill Cemetery in Huntington is the oldest burying ground in that town. It was a base camp for the British during the Revolutionary War. It is home to the ghosts of those who died on that soil and also of those who are buried there. The Huntington Historical Society provides more resources on the hauntings there.
- The Amityville Horror House is probably the most notorious haunted house to come from Long Island. In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Junior murdered his whole family in the house and blamed it on the devil. The next family to settle in that house, The Lutz Family, was chased out by the paranormal after spending only 28 days there. 108 Ocean Avenue will forever be known as the Amityville Horror House
These paranormal experiences can be real or fake. In the spirit of Halloween, we can still appreciate the history behind these places. Long Island has many horror stories, and these are just the beginning.
