Sable Island is a National Park Preserve located in Canada. It’s ~42 KM long (~26 Miles), and its width is surprisingly less than one mile, around 1.3 KM. This however isn’t the most unique part of the island.
This island’s population is primarily made up of horses, there are 400 of them. This on it’s own wouldn’t be too shocking as islands primarily made up of mainly one type of animal aren’t uncommon, like Snake Island (Snakes), Komodo Island (Komodo Dragon Moniter Lizard), Shedao Island (Snakes), Big Major Cay (Pigs), Ōkunoshima (Rabbit), etc.
These horses however, are not only self-sufficient, but also arrived at Sable Island by French-Catholics in the 1700’s. When they eventually left, because Sable Island doesn’t really have anything there to help sustain people or many other living things, no people, no trees, and no fresh water, the horses were forced to adapt for over 300 years, gaining slight differences than their mainland counterparts.
The Sable Island horses are smaller, stockier, and tend to grow thicker mains than other breeds. The thicker coat helps conserve body heat in the spring. They also tend to shed this coat a considerable amount more than other domestic breeds of horses.
