The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

On September 17 of this year was the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. This awards ceremony was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. This show commemorates the work of many actors, actresses, directors, and screenwriters for various television programs and shows. Some of the most recent shows that the Emmy’s commemorate were Black-ish, House of Cards, and Stranger Things. This year, the celebration was hosted by Stephen Colbert, who also performed alongside many of the actors who were nominated for awards before the main ceremony began.
Shows were grouped by their genre and the winner for each award comes from each individual genre . The winners received trophies that showed acknowledgment of their success. There were many different types of awards given during the Emmys. A show from every group received an “Outstanding” award. The Outstanding award is given to the show that it was the best of its genre. The Outstanding Drama Series award was given to The Handmaid’s Tale, created by Bruce Miller. This show is based on a novel written by Margaret Atwood, which was published in 1985. The Outstanding Comedy Series went to Veep, created by Armando Lannucci. The political comedy show was an adaptation of an older British sitcom, The Thick of It.
Awards were also given to specific actors and actresses that night. The best lead actors and actresses in drama series that received awards were Sterling K. Brown, who played the part of Randall Pearson in This is Us, and Elisabeth Moss, who played the part of Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale. Supporting actors and actresses received awards as well. The winners of those awards were John Lithgow from The Crown and Ann Dowd from The Handmaid’s Tale. The same awards were given to actors and actresses in comedy series. Donald Glover who played the part of Earnest Marks in Atlanta and Julia Louis-Dreyfus who played the role of Selina Meyer in Veep. Winners of the best supporting actors and actresses in comedy series awards were Alec Baldwin from Saturday Night Live and Kate McKinnon, also from Saturday Night Live.
Manyt of awards were given to recognize the work of people involved in limited series or movies. The Outstanding Limited Series award was given to Big Little Lies. The best lead actor and lead actress in a limited series were Riz Ahmed from The Night Of and Nicole Kidman from Big Little Lies. The best supporting actor in a limited series or movie was Alexander Skarsgard from Big Little Lies, while the best supporting actress was Laura Dern, also from Big Little Lies.
Some miscellaneous awards were given for the Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The best Outstanding Variety Talk Series was Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, and the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program was The Voice. Additional awards were given to the directors and writers of shows. Donald Glover starred in, wrote, and directed Atlanta. He got the award for best directing for a comedy series. The award for best writing for a comedy series was given to Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe for writing Master of None. The best director of a drama series was decided to be Reed Morano, who directed The Handmaid’s Tale. The Handmaid’s Tale was clearly a very popular show, as it received many awards. The writer for this show, Bruce Miller, received the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series award.
Many shows and actors were recognized at this year’s Emmy Awards, and we can be sure that more fantastic shows and people will be recognized at the Emmys next year, and for many years to come.
