Israel-Hamas War: Protests and Boycotts

Israel-Hamas War: Protests and Boycotts

The Israel-Hamas War is a war that has been going on since October 7, 2023 between Israel and Hamas led Palestinian migrant groups. This is taking place in the Gaza strip due to a conflict over territory that dates back to the nineteenth century. Protests and boycotts are taking place all over the world relating to this war between Israelis and Palestinians. There have been recent protests at Columbia University and individuals boycotting Starbucks because of the accused support of “genocide” by Starbucks.

The protest at Columbia University began because of Israel’s offensive in Gaza after the deadly attack launched by Hamas on Southern Israel. This deadly attack ended up killing about 1,200 people, most of them being civilians. About 250 hostages were also taken on October 7th too. Protesters at Columbia University have been arrested and few injuries have been reported. Some other universities protesting Israel are Duke University, Emerson College, University of California, Berkeley, etc. Many young people are against Israel’s government in these protests and sympathize with the Palestinian cause. Individuals have also been boycotting Starbucks along with these protests at their schools. Customers have boycotted Western companies in the Middle East because they assume ties to support Israel’s War in Gaza. Starbucks’ earnings have decreased and have not met expectations due to the fact that less people have been supporting Starbucks. Although Starbucks has claimed that they have “no political agenda” and have never used their profits to “fund any government or military operations anywhere,” individuals continue to boycott Stabucks because of their own beliefs about the Israel-Hamas War.

Wars all over the world have been issues for many many years, but more recent wars have gained more attention because of the recent technology of our time and the way propaganda can be spread so fast throughout the entire world. Protests and boycotts regarding wars are especially bad at this day in age because of the instant spreading of information.
