As the 2025 MLB season comes to an end, the New York Mets find themselves in the midst of yet another postseason push.
But it didn’t have to be this way.
The Mets were leading the NL East until the All Star Break, and then reclaimed it from Philadelphia in late July after Philly surged. But then August came around. That’s when the Mets yearly collapse brewed.
Suddenly the starting pitchers couldn’t go more than 4 innings, the bullpen couldn’t stop giving up runs, and every hitter besides Juan Soto could not hit the ball to save their life. It was a disaster.
These slumps from a team with the second highest payroll in baseball led to the callups of three top prospects, Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat. These young pitchers were called upon with the task of saving the Mets season.
I believed that the Mets season was over at that point, not because I didn’t trust the young guys, but because they should have never been put in that situation in the first place. The Mets constantly falter at the worst points in the season after paying big money for players, something needs to be fixed.
Now contrary to my belief, the young guys jumpstarted a revival in the Mets season. Lindor, Alonso, and Nimmo came back to life and started being more valuable to a lineup that basically only consisted of Soto for a while. McLean was(and still is) unhittable and has been the sole savior of this rotation, Tong had a shaky first couple of starts but the future Minor League Player of the Year is starting to come around, and Sproat has been solid in his first couple of starts.
The Mets are now going into their last series of the season against the Miami Marlins. The Mets put themselves in a spot where they have to win every game if they want any shot of making the playoffs due to the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks being right behind them in the standings.
Unless the Mets win the World Series, I will consider this season a failure. A team with this high of a payroll and these high expectations cannot keep coming up short. Just barely making the playoffs as a 6th seed is not something they can get away with anymore. The Mets need to start winning more games, but clearly, that’s easier said than done.
